Why arguing about the letter 'U' cost me $10k (and what AI has to do with it)

If we had now what I we needed back then....

Hey Folks,

EEver had one of those moments where you want to bash your head against your keyboard because someone's arguing about something so mind-numbingly trivial?

Picture this: It's 2018, I'm running campaigns for a major Aussie property developer, and I'm stuck in an endless debate about whether to spell "colour" or "color", "specialise" or "specialize."

(Yes, really. This was apparently what passed for high-level marketing strategy back then...)

Here's the kicker - we were advertising EXCLUSIVELY to an Australian audience. You know, the folks who grew up with the Queen's English, meat pies, and a healthy appreciation for the letter 'U' in words like 'favourite' and 'harbour.'

But there I was, burning daylight arguing with someone from the agency about whether we should "Americanise" (or should that be Americanize? 😉) our ad copy.

Meanwhile, our property developer client was waiting for new ad variations to test.

Talk about missing the forest for the trees, right?

But here's where it gets interesting...

That wasn't just about spelling - it was a symptom of a bigger problem that was eating away at my agency's efficiency:

  • Waiting weeks for new content

  • Endless revision cycles

  • A team of 3-5 people just to get one campaign live

  • Testing one measly variable at a time because production took forever

Fast forward to Christmas 2018, and all those inefficiencies came back to bite me harder than a cranky kangaroo.

My main client (who represented 90% of my income - rookie mistake) hit financial troubles. Suddenly, I'm staring at an empty bank account and wondering if I should've spent less time arguing about spelling and more time building systems that weren't dependent on client whims.

(Nothing like being broke at Christmas to make you rethink your business model, eh?)

But here's the wild part...

If someone had told me back then that in just a few years, AI would transform this entire landscape, I'd have thought they were a few snags short of a barbie.

Imagine telling 2018 me:

  • "You'll be able to generate and test thousands of ad variations instantly"

  • "Your content creation won't depend on team availability"

  • "Split testing will be faster than ordering your morning flat white"

  • "And mate, it'll even know the difference between Aussie and American English!"

I probably would've laughed harder than a kookaburra.

But that's exactly where we are now.

The same campaigns that used to take weeks and a team of specialists can now be done in hours.

Speaking of which...

There’s a cheeky little link below you’ll want to check out…

They just dropped something that would've made 2018 me weep with joy: the capacity to build AI powered content with a few clicks…

If you're running campaigns right now (or planning to), this is the kind of tool I wish I'd had back when I was building my agency.

Instead of arguing about spelling, you could be:

  • Testing hundreds of variations

  • Scaling what works

  • All while maintaining that authentic Aussie voice your local audience expects

  • ….Or anywhere in the world for that matter

Check it out below….

Supercharge your paid social with expert UGC

  • Scale your team's capabilities without increasing headcount

  • Break through plateaus and reach new audiences on Meta

  • Leverage authentic storytelling in competitive landscapes

  • Reduce CPAs by 25% while scaling your reach

Give the above a tickle if you’re into easier content, quicker.

Cheers,

Jamie

P.S. Fun fact: After my agency days, I pivoted to building my personal brand and hit my first $1k day in just 7 days. First $10k month followed shortly after. Amazing what you can do when you're not stuck in endless revision cycles, eh?
